This class is all about devising! Devising is when we start with an object and make theatre from it. It's a way of doing theatre that is used by professional actors, playwrights, directors and designers to gather inspiration, ideas and create scripts too.
For our students, this class will use a Suitcase of Possibility that has several objects in it. The objects will change each class, and they will be a mystery until the suitcase is opened.
Using the objects, the students will learn a devising process to create short theatre pieces from scratch. They will share these theatre pieces with each other, learning how to be a supportive fellow-creators audience as part of a theatre process.
What the students create will be from their imaginations. Even if another group had the exact same items in their Suitcase of Possibility, their stories would be different. That's one of the things that makes theatre so special: the collaboration, creativity and creation of stories that could not exist at any other time and place except with this group of artists in this room.
With devising, students work on their acting skills, start to do proto-directing work, practice blocking (where they stand in space that helps to tell the story), and tussle with the challenge of how to make a story get up on its feet and "read" to an audience the way they were hoping it would.
No prior experience needed. No reading or writing in this class unless a students loves to do that; we are happy to support learning how to note creative ideas as part of the devising.
Please note - no sharing outside of class for this one. We don't have a lot of time with the students and want to stay process-oriented without outside sharing pressure.
Participants must be 6 years to 9 years old when the program starts.
Registration starts on 10/25/2023.
